Soft-mushy sounding comes from a lot of different reasons...but I don't think any of them are 12 fret, 24.9" scale, or slope shoulder. I say build away!!!

If I do a 12 fret, 24.9 scale slope dread will I end up with a soft-mushy sounding guitar? This assumes I am judicious in light construction,beefed up only where really necessary(imbuia back and sides-Lutz top and also walnut and WRC top for the other). Thanks for help. MT |

soft and mushy sound uh, well one thing might consider when building is the bracing and build, not the neck wood scale or shape |

Fellas- The question came from this-longer scale,more tension, associated with more punch- 12 strings,more tension more stress-short scale,less tension for same pitch,somewhat easier for old hands-short neck,less weight and I never have been able to work very far up the neck especially on my 12 string. My 1976 D12-28 is 14 fret with short scale and notwithstanding the usual 1970's vintage criticism plays well and sounds just fine to my tin ear. I just wanted the input of much more experienced builders than I. Thanks, MT |

I'd say just don't leave a rag in the soundhole, and go for it!
